Forensic Science Community Questions FBI's CODIS Upgrade

13 core loci used in the world's largest DNA database may not be enough to convict
alleged criminals in certain investigations. The FBI's database (CODIS)
contains 10 million profiles, but forensic scientists are questioning if they
are looking at the right genetic markers. It has been recommended that core
loci increase to 24 genetic markers to assist in distinguishing between
familial cases. In addition, the 24 markers will be useful in possibly matching
DNA samples that have been degraded at the scene of a crime. Forensic
scientists are hoping that the needs of future casework will be the deciding
factor on which genetic markers are used to classify individuals DNA profile.
